Tai Chi
Tai Chi: Meditation in Motion Everyone’s heard of Tai Chi, but not many really know what it is. So what exactly is Tai Chi? Think slow motion. Taiji, more commonly known as Tai Chi is all about relaxing the muscles, using circular movements, controlled breathing, and flowing through the motions, going from one move to the next without pausing, almost like a dance. This dance is what’s known as a ‘form’, a series of movements linked together. A short form can be a dozen movements or less (recommended for the beginners); longer forms can be over a hundred movements. Tai Chi originated in China, in the Wudang Mountains. A monk and Kung Fu master left the Shaolin Temple where he lived to be a hermit. Applying the principles he learnt in his training as a monk and martial artist to the grace and fluidity he observed watching a snake and bird do battle, he formulated Tai Chi. In today’s society, Tai Chi has stood up to the test of modern science, to prove it’s worth in muscle strengthening, flexibility balance and, to an extent, aerobic conditioning (all that breathing really makes your lungs work). But Tai Chi is not just for the fit and healthy. Dozens of studies have proved that Tai Chi is helpful in reducing arthritic pain, and in lowering the chance of health and medical conditions such as low bone density, breast cancer, heart disease and heart failure, hypertension, stroke and sleeping problems.

A Tai Chi class will usually consist of a rotational warm up, practice of a few Tai Chi forms, and some Qigong (read Chi Kung) work, which roughly translates to ‘energy work’. All this combines to create the ultimate “Meditation in Motion”!
